He had the better skills to fight a Balrog than Gandalf, even if just based on their nature he would be less mighty than the Maia Olórin. WebIn any case, it’s often going to end up a struggle between little good vs big bad because bad is corruption and power corrupts. So the powerful of the world will always be more evil than the weak. Just to tie it back into Tolkien, the concept doesn’t seem to be lost on him.
