I was thinking of trying to remove the clear with some lacquer thinner and then treating it with linseed oil/pine tar to look more like the original stock.

How ever getting it to turn out right can be quite a challenge. The wood needs to be 100 % free of any cosmoline in order for the stain to. soak in properly and show the red color very well.
